They’ve been in Abe’s before, I think she’d remember them. Look at the love Joy feels for Burl, knowing that he’s taken all the caramels and jelly beans.

    How did LSU do, Leaky?

Indeed, why not take the whole bowl? It’s out there for all to sample from, isn’t it? Good of Burl to catch the hint, too. I’m a little surprised that Abe’s doesn’t have a “Penny-wise, pound-foolish” drill where they replace the sample bowl on a moment’s notice with something nasty, cheap and overage. And Burl, where do you get off talking about people who are a “tad overwight?”

    Morning all……

Gee, seems like only a couple of hours ago I said goodnight.

I heard that Leaky doesn’t have to do anything drastic. Congratulations, when you get here, Leaky — though you may still be out celebrating.

Marg — I Googled Abe’s, and found they have several locations — probably various salespeople too.

So maybe she doesn’t recognise them…. but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have their mug sho…. sorry, I mean pictures, posted in the back room of every store.

Mikie, I was the manager of a chocolate shop.

You can’t give out-dated candy — usually against health regulations.

And believe it or not, people have gotten the flu and gone looking for whoever “gave them bad food” to sue.

“Nasty” samples might be talked about with 10 potential customers.

We did sample whatever chocolates were close to out-dating — but we handed out one per customer.

I remember a woman who asked for six samples and “one of those cute little boxes” to put them in so her friend could “try” our chocolate.

    Sorry, no.

Or, I’d offer a selected sample, and they’d ask for something else.

“Sorry, we’re not sampling those. They cost about 65¢ each if you’d like one.”

“But I didn’t bring any money.”

I was dying to say “Then why are you *here??”*

But I had to smile, and if I had enough, even give the freeloaders what they asked for.

Also, I had some neighbors who went for a walk in the mall every morning, then came by my shop for a sample chocolate, thinking I’d be happy to see my “friends”.

6 chocolates a week is about a pound a month for each of them — and they never spent one cent.

They live in Iowa now, being “friendly” with some other deserving salesperson, no doubt.

    The joy of retail.

LSU lucked out and won in OT. Alabama didn’t deserve to win after missing so many field goals. It should never have gone to OT.

Thanks, Susan. I sort of suspected as much. On days when I had trouble accessing comics.com, I was more PO’d about not getting my daily fix of Peanuts. The rest I could pretty much take or leave.

Susan, It must have been difficult for you to work in retail with your sharp wit. Aside from the Parky’s hot dogs and fried chicken while my youngest was in kinder, I’ve always been a homebody or working at a desk. Even there, I could get in trouble for being too frank and honest.

Burl only needs a bag because his pockets are now full. I saw the find-it before I read what it was, because I always read t-shirts, notes etc first. I wondered about the love hearts.

@vldazzle: was that “frank and honest” or “Frank and Ernest”?

I know “frank and honest” is a failed law firm.

Hopefully Burl and Joy don’t vote.

The sample candy bowl…. is full in panel one…. empty in panel two….. The loose candy to the left in panle one has been replaced with packaged candy on panel two…. Perhaps ABE is working behind the scenes…….

    Good afternoon good people

I am totally enervated after last nights game. Went to champions square (right next to the superdome) they set up a 32 by 84 foot screen tv. Food, drinks (only cola for me) and some scrumptious gumbo. They had thousands of lsu fans there. Then we to a ride to the gulf coast and gambled all night. It’ll take me a day or two to recouperate!!!!!!!!!!!!Thanks for the well wishes Marg…………You are the best my friend!!!

Marg — you’d think so, wouldn’t you? But alas, Penny-ness comes in different varieties, and theres more of it than I’d like to think.

V Dazz is right, in that retail can be hard when you can think of a lot of snappy rejoinders you have to keep under your hat.

Luckily, I like people in general, so it worked for me.

GymShoe — I’ll get back to our discussion before the night is out.

I’m doing this on a phone, which is a bit tedious, while I wait for my keyboard to… Um… decide it doesn’t mind an ounce or two of coffee….

which somehow … landed on it. (whistles innocently…)
