The Penny’s have wandered into unfamiliar territory. A book store. Of course they’re only there to buy $1.00 books. Don’t forget a gift receipt.Sadly all of the book stores around here have closed.
Penny. Book Store. Complete contradictions. How did they ever walk into one? Does Burl even read or write?
Sadly, there are fewer and fewer bookmen (and women) any longer. There used to be a wonderful bookwoman here in Houston, unfortunately now deceased. I asked her for an out of print book, first edition, signed by the author. She took two years, but found it. What a treasure! And the book was pretty valuable, too.
Though I’m surprised to see the Penny’s at a book store I have to agree with them. People could make a day of going to the book store. They even serve coffee. It wasn’t like that when I was a kid. There’d be someone hovering over your shoulder asking if you were going to buy that book.
Now, I to am part of the problem. I now buy my books online
e-readers are becoming more common. I like mine, because you never lose your place, it has a built-in dictionary, I get books instantaneously, no old books gathering dust on the shelf, no trees cut down… but I still love paper books and have a wall full to overflowing. I guess I always will. And some are pretty musty!
I’m afraid if I used e-books I might never finish one (if I could easily switch to something else I just thought of). I prefer to buy mine on line; I started when Cuddles was my shopping buddy and they started serving “food” so she was not allowed. The Pennys DO seem out of place and I think that most of those folks are – the guy in gym shoes reading the Illiad, next to one reading Tom Clancey? I think the former must just be checking a reference as he surely can’t read the whole thing there (That’s one of the books yet unread (in entirety) on my shelves;-P) I also send good wishes to Marg and Leaky; strange, I have so many friends younger than I with serious problems and I don’t even take any meds – just lucky!
Oh, and Mikie too – sorry! I don’t remember hearing that, Susan. And Ken Russell just died before he finished even the casting of his “Alice” (which I’m sure would have been much better than Tim Burton’s). I’ve liked most of Ken’s work, only a few were a bit OTT even for me (I think it was the Mahler). I taped Music Lovers when I saw it on TV way back when it was shown.
Today…. when I arived at GoComics web site…. I was entertained by some “boys” talking in the background…. about random stuff they were doing…. Just audio…. ? ? ?.
Also…. GoComics changed the “turkey” logo… back to normal…..
The slowest it’s ever been….and loading the rest of the comics really sucks after taking forever to get here and taking forevermore to see the rest of the comments.
Did it accrue to you guys that they may have gone into the bookstore to get a pop-up book for Burl? Also bookstores sell other things, especially since the ebook era. They may be looking to see if they can find another clown print.
Will miss you Marge, I hope all goes well and you are kicking things again soon. Maybe you can get a hold of a laptop. I took mine to the hospital.
Leaky: I asked my wife about her sciatica, she said that she still has it, it is one of the things her pain pump covers up.
I just got a Nook last week for my birthday and I do love it. Though my wife bought it online, they do sell them at the bookstore down the street. Also, she did by it from the Barns and Noble website. And I still will be buying ebooks from the physical bookstore along with other paraphernalia. Have you see their latest Angry Birds toys? I bought my wife the AB mug for Christmas and a cover for my Nook.I am with you, Vldazzle, even with the ebooks it is nice to have a real honest to goodness hardcopy book from time to time. Especially a specialty book or maybe a first edition, though I can not really afford them. Was Cuddles a working dog?
And I see the bookstore carries the latest Dinette Set edition. What are the odds of that?
Sunshine: Back in the mid eighties a good friend of mine bought a last years Farmer’s Almanac. He told me there were still interesting stories in it. He even showed me a few passages. I think he was in a store and just happened to see it on sale. As far as I know he still has it tucked on one of his shelves. And in case you are wondering he always bought up-to-date books too as well as an impressive King, Koontz, and Clancy collection among other authors. His baseball stat books were always newest edition.
Well, I guess I finally ran out of things to say. One day Sunshine and I will have to have a competition to see who rambles the most. Even if I lose that’s okay, she always has something interesting to say.

Mornin" Crustwood!
Well, they are gawking at the sights in there, like the tourists they are.
Does Joy think Grimes Fairy Tales are the dirty ones? And that would be more fun than grim ones, right?
The 1989 Almanac for $1 is expensive — I actually saw 2009 ones recently at the Dollar Tree.
What’s embarrassing is that I almost bought one. I mean, not everything has changed….
But I knew I could just Google it all anyway, like I do the comics.
Which is why bookstores and newspapers are failing….. which is why I’m part of the problem…. ….sigh…
Anyway, good luck Marg — will be sending wishes for a super speedy recovery.
Which reminds me — how are YOU doing Leaky?
Mikie. Leaky, Marg …. anybody else on the verge of breaking or renovating body parts….
will all you guys just stop falling apart, please??!!
I’m running out of superglue.

This site has hardly worked at all for me since I got up today.
It was very slow when I commented on new strips before bed, and now it’s worse.
I can’t even open some of those forums to see what was said since then.
The one comment I did manage to make today was apparently lost when the page wouldn’t reload, so this may be too.
And Dave!
Ramble????
ME????!!
I would win, you know. :)
