Bravo and good thinking for you, Dale! As in doubles tennis, return the serve low and hard right at the net player’s gonies. You waited your time until you thought Burl was most unready and sprung the trap on him.But what’s going on here? The closest cast of The Thinker is in Louisville KY at the University there. Are they on their way to Dollywood and making a “rest stop?” (Tortured pun intended.)
“1880s: Thomas Crapper’s plumbing company built flush toilets of Giblin’s design. Although not the original inventor, Crapper popularized the siphon system for emptying the tank, replacing the earlier floating valve system which was prone to leaks. Some of Crapper’s designs were made by Thomas Twyford. The similarity between Crapper’s name and the much older word crap is a coincidence.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flush_toilet
I’ve always wondered whether M. Rodin was bothered by all the snide remarks about that pose.
You can even buy little joke statuettes of the sculpture (which Rodin himself called “The Poet”) sitting on the toilet. Not very poetic!
Yeah, Crapper sounds so plausible a lot of people think the term comes from him…. but no.
Another bogus, though plausible-sounding etymology is that “John” comes from John Harrington, who actually invented the flush toilet in the 16th century…..
But his “water closet” idea never caught on. It was re-invented 250 years later, when he was pretty well forgotten.
Meanwhile, Burl invents history every time Timmy asks a question…. and I hope one day Timmy does catch on.
Here in Crustwood, I hope a fine Valentine’s Day was had by all.
I think the highlight of mine was……… hmmm….. was……oh…. maybe….. making it to the market tonight before this weeks sales ended, so I could buy some more oranges at 4 lbs for a dollar?
Hey, these days I take my excitement where I can get it.
I will say this comic strip cleaned up my language. I used to cuss when saw someone doing something really stupid. Now I just say DINETTE SET and move on.
@Leaky and Susan, I can’t be annoyed by that. They will soon be overripe for this year, but this is the best time to visit Phoenix. Weather is moderate and all the citrus will be blooming in the next month. The smell is fabulous! I love ventilating with fresh air with that natural perfume.
