Hmmm. I’ll not go down the first line of thought I had re: Burl and Joy and the fake/real thing. Maybe Velveeta and Spam. Although both have their uses. V melts like a dream for making chili con queso and S is just the thing when you gotta have some fat, salt and sugar. Can the great state of HI be completely wrong? This has to be an early panel, Timmy is so young.
I don’t think Timmy’s size indicates the age of the strip…People in Crustwood change size and shape with regularity…. well….except there’s no actual regularity or continuity.
ALL the panels are recycled, and characters get cut and pasted from one to another as the need arises… sometimes carefully, sometimes not. Some connecting lines are scribbled or left out….
Just look at Marlene…. she’s apparently lost her head…. it’s looking back at Timmy while floating above her neck. This Timmy may have come from a strip where everyone was drawn to a smaller scale.
Some dialogue is new, while some whole strips are re-runs….and every year it seems there’s a discussion or two about real vs. artificial trees.
it must be an older panel… Last week (I think) they were out in the country far away from the stores to get a cut tree. Well maybe they found out it was cheaper to get one of last years for 90% off.
As a kid I liked Velveeta, my aunt would make small cubes or shred it for homemade tacos and I would always grab a few extra pieces but Joy couldn’t tempt me with anything she’s passing out.
I was born during WWII, and we had a fake tree. It was a bunch of branches, with their ends tucked into tape which had been wrapped around a dowel about the diameter of a broom handle. You pulled it out of a cardboard tube, turned it upside down and thunked it on the floor so the branches spread out. After the holidays, you turned it over and thunked it again so all the branches fell flat against the dowel and slid it into the tube until next year. For a good while we had a real tree, but now we have an artificial one – a far cry from the old fake!
Mikie… My Dad made us do that even when I was a teenager…. …. even though by the time I left home,in the1960’s, some of the newer tinsel we bought was plastic.
And no tossing it, neither onto the tree nor back into the box afterward….Each strand was straightened, and draped carefully over a branch, or laid all in the same direction to store.
Every ornament was put into the proper box, usually the same boxes they came in.
My sister’s birthday is in very early January, and the tree had to have disappeared so the house wouldn’t look like Christmas for that.

The only thing Velveeta is good for is trout bait. Mix velveeta, chopped raw bacon and garlic. roll into little balls and catch trout!

And. I suppose, if the fish aren’t biting you could put it on toast and broil it……………….and yes, we’ve done it.

We’ve had a fake tree for 20 years or so. Nobody wants to hear me sneeze constantly.

Sheesh, you would think I could have gotten my thoughts together and put this all on one post.

As a newlywed 64 years ago, the first thing I learned to cook was spam boiled with potatoes and onions. Try it, it’s good.
