Legend still has it that when the gauge needle hits right dead on “E”, you have approximately one gallon (or so) left to drive on in that tank, and THEN it becomes a question of your motor’s MPG specs, and IF you can hit a gas station….or not….within that range. But “E” gallons? Hoo boy, THAT a good one!!
I had a ‘76 Capri a few decades ago which had a nasty quirk – the gas gauge needle would go down to just about 1/16 tank, then start going back up!!! It’s kinda disconcerting to be out of gas when the gauge was showing a bit over 1/8 full.
My the street in front of my house and the high school parking lot driveway have steep hills. Students trying to get to school on a splash of gas and fumes have stalled there many times. We roll them down to the bottom of the hill where they restart their cars and hurry to the closest downhill gas station.

Dale, the warning chime when you’re out of gas doesn’t have to go off. The car will stop running and that’s how you know…

Click and Clack used to do this all the time. Constantly trying to figure out how far they could get on fumes. Course, they knew what “E” meant.
