I find myself doing something I almost never do, which is agreeing with the Big Oaf. If someone gives you a gift and you have the opportunity to thank them in person, then that can and should be perceived as a suitable expression of gratitude. But if you are on the receiving end of a thank you note after the note’s composer already thanked you in person, it reeks of “My Grandma made me do it”. It’s overkill.
