The idea of any of this crowd springing for an encyclopedia is just insane. Actually, Burl might be able to look up American cheese, but not peanut butter. The only encyclopedia they’re likely to have is the “A” volume of Funk and Wagnalls that you could buy on the grocery store installment plan. At the grocery, the “A” volume cost one cent, and they expected you to buy each subsequent volume at $4 a piece on later visits, until you had the whole set. But Burl draws the line at paying more than a penny for a book. I mean, you have to read it for yourself. He got as far as Abyssinia before he gave it up. He did once read The Neverending Story and tried to find a lawyer to sue the publisher because after the exhausting marathon of lip moving, it ended.
