    In the Faust legend, Mephistopheles appears to the Doktor in the form of a black poodle. Of course, he was just A devil rather than THE devil, but if we assume that the powers inherent in the Lesser Infernals are also at the disposal of the Greater, then Lucifer/Satan might manifest to human (or canine) eyes in whatever form he might wish. “The Devil hath pow’r to assume many a pleasing shape.” UN-pleasing shapes, too, presumably.

    Of course, if Truefellow believed he were on the track of another dog, this whole story might have taken a decidedly different turn…
