I’m with Sophie, this was a very roundabout and needlessly complex way of explaining it.
And unnecessary anyway. The dog’s going to end up on the couch whether you want her to or not. If you really didn’t want the dog on the couch, then you didn’t want the dog either, because in my experience, you can’t have it both ways.

Ours have the blanket AND the chew toy. That’s why the blanket is there.

Pets, in my opinion, just see the black and white of everything. Don’t explain. Just cover the couch and let Sophie up there (with chew toy).
