    When I read this, I didn’t think about dogs being color-blind. I took it as they have been in the kennel so long that they haven’t seen roses and violets in bloom. I googled the poem out of curiosity. It goes back to The Faerie Queene written by Sir Edmund Spenser in 1590.

    My understanding is that most dogs are red-green colorblind (so much for Christmas for them). I remember seeing a poster of a lovely dog in a field of grass and flowers, with a “smile”, with the caption:

    Roses are greyViolets are grey…

    OK, so the second line isn’t quite right, but you couldn’t help but smile at the poster.
