Voice from television: Good evening. Today the President of the Unites States is out of work. Cutbacks in wasteful federal spending was cited as the prime reason. Bob Schieffer reports. Schieffer: When White House spokesman Ron Nessen read the news to a stunned press corps today, hardened, veteran reporters openly wept... Nessen himself was shaking so badly his cigarette went out. There is no official word yet at to Mr. Ford's plans, but CBS news has learned that top White House aides are encouraging the President to take the opportunity to go back to college. He is expected to major in French.
