Zonker: It's not fair! Why is it we 20-year-olds have to pay for the failures of U.S foreign policy? Mark: That's the way it's always been, man. Mike: Well, it's not like we've been drafted. Carter's just trying to send the Kremlin a message. Zonker: Why can't we send our own messages? It'd have much more impact! Mike: You mean, send our registration cards to the Soviet Union? Zonker: Right! They want a mesage? I'll write those suckers a message! There! Mike: "Dear Ruskies: Back off or else. Love, Zonker." Mark: Mixed signals, Zonk. That's why we're in trouble in the first place.
Yeah, the characters don’t age during the early years. They are perpetual college students even though life moves at normal speed in their world (political events, etc.). From January 1983 – October 1984, Trudeau was on hiatus. When he returned, they had jumped to actual 84, and everyone had already graduated and been in the real world (except Zonker of course). Graduation was shown in the Doonesbury Musical.
