Rick: Secretary Haig, did you review the El Salvador "white paper" before it was published? Haig: Affirmative. Extenuatingly, my input was restricted to syntax and grammar. I trusted the writer implicitly, and had no forewarning he was predisposed to disgracing his uniform. All of us here feel badly misled. We believed the "white paper" proved that massive Soviet mischief was afoot. That's why we dispatched military advisors in the first place. Rick: Will you be withdrawing them, then, sir? Haig: No. We don't see why they should have to suffer, too.
