Pharisees is a very good analogy. Getting so obsessed with following the letter of the written word that the ideas behind it are completely obscured, and even negated. And the “written word” was an oral history for many years prior to it being “written”. Anyone ever play “telephone”???? And hand copyists, as happened for centuries, are not much better!

He was always one to blow in the wind anyway - if he thinks the GOP is making a comeback, watch him drop his awful wife on the concrete and “Rush” over to the other side of the aisle. Then why has man chosen to take the god breathed word and change it more times that the New York telephone directory? How is it a being with aseity can’t make sure a pristine copy gets into the hands of each generation born?

Scholars believe that there are between 2-1/2 and 5 million differences between the 5600 Greek NT writings we have in our possession. Only 80% are editorial mistakes of the copyists.

Of course, that doesn’t include the 30 Gospels of Jesus that didn’t make the vote to get included into the NT canon.

The hallmark of good political satire is when the author takes on those in power. Not going to happen with this strip.

LIke a good Catholic, “Absolve me of my sins and help me commit more.” Do these gop “christians” actually read and understand what that book is trying to teach them? Doubtful. If they want to run around on their wives, thats cool. Just don’t point fingers and tell people how to live their lives.

It says ‘GOP Lawmaker’ so I’m betting a fictitious congressman, probably a composite of Ensign, Pickering and probably a few others, maybe even with a bit of Clinton thrown in.

Sorry, JTPozenel, but as a pagan, I find the monotheistic vs atheistic hooraw to be quite entertaining at my remove. Not offended by this strip at all. I think the hypocrisy of the people who wrap themselves in the mantle of an allegedly perfect god to shield themselves from their own imperfections is a perfect target for mockery. Forgetting their god shows flaws in their own texts is priceless.

Let me make sure I understand here - the Bible is absolutely true, except it CAN’T be, because the Torah is true, except it CAN”T be, because the Koran is the true word, except it CAN’T be, because the Bible is the actual truth, except….. You can BELIEVE anything you want, but believing the sun rises in the west and sets in the east does not make it so.

i got a feeling i’m going to be reading without commenting for the next little while. as a canadian, i don’t know near enough about the issue being satirized here, but will hope to be educated. i’m glad to see today’s comment thread remains civilized and cool headed, and hope it remains so for the next while. thanks all.

just because one thing is true doesn’t mean that the opposite thing must be false. That only applies to a certain kind of mathematics. There are other kinds.

Quite true, Rina; and it’s a pity symbolic logic isn’t taught in elementary school.

Rina: Because the sun DOES rise in the East, yes, it DOES mean the opposite is false, and you appear to be blaming the messenger here. I don’t teach that any particular religion is the ONE way to get to heaven, RELIGIONS do. I just referred to this well-known point.
