Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for September 24, 2011

Transcript:
Joanie: Something wrong, honey? Jeff: Yeah. Once again, everyone's on my case! This time it's Dad! And Becca, my new editor! Joanie: Oh, dear. Anything I can do to help? Jeff: Um... yeah. Got five bucks?
Jeff has no ambition to see his dreams in print. The world of publishing, with its insane emulation, is peopled by failures like his dad or power-crazed witches like Becca Fickle. Five dollars is about what it’s worth, and Jeff is right to prefer his mother and his private man cave.
It seems that Trudeau’s plot is more concerned with exposing Sarah Palin than with developing a relationship between Jeff and Becca. I was hoping for a romance!
Jeff’s all about poor me, poor me, pour me another beer. Beccas still his editor (she smells money) – she never was a mate for Jeff (too smart) – she just wants her % of the 10 dollars, ie. half. all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I ought to have said that the Doonesbury SP contrasts with Boopsie or Joannie—somebody her age. Alex and Drew are RB’s coevals, and they will turn one day into elderly Doonesbury women, whereas Becca will go the way of SP.
Love how many men are romantics at heart and want Jeff and Becca to get together….she is not hooking up with a bigshot wannabee like Jeff, she is too smart
@palin drome – I think you’re reading WAY too much into Becca. She’s just a normal, educated woman, with a bit of flair, not uncommon in literary or artistic worlds. She is worlds away from SP.
@pokerfaced – I’ve noticed it’s the conservatives on this comment thread who continually fixate on the $5 or $10. They completely miss the bigger point of the relationships going on here. I have to conclude, it’s the conservatives who have no life.
To follow up on my reading of Becca—-and to drop her and SP as topics for discussion—-I’ll give Lewis Carroll the last word on cartoon witches and redheads. Here’s what he said about the red queens in the Alice books: "I pictured to myself the Queen of Hearts as a sort of embodiment of ungovernable passion – a blind and aimless Fury. The Red Queen I pictured as a Fury, but of another type; her passion must be cold and calm – she must be formal and strict, yet not unkindly; pedantic to the 10th degree, the concentrated essence of all governesses!
@pd – Regardless of what SP thinks of herself (she’s a narcissist), she and Becca aren’t even in the same universe. Becca’s hardly a witch. And not all redheads are alike.
Is Jeff even going to be punished for this? He gave away a book he wasn’t supposed to have. He didn’t even give the book back and tell his editor she gave him the wrong book.
Dad has no money. Remember – he blogs. Mom has a pension (doesn’t she?) Good for at least a fiver.
Hey – guess what I saw in Chapters today? “The Rogue” by that McGuiness person. Here I thought this was an imaginary book on a comic strip. I had no idea the book was real. Yes I did a double take, just to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. Went “wow, the comic strip was right…” And then headed over to the table with the zombie books Got a nice one on origami.

If Dad says no, go to Mom.

Hey, if Dad says yes, maybe Mom will too, so might as well ask. $5 is $5 after all.

Look’s like Dad was a tough cookie, but maybe Mom is still a softie!

She’s still his new editor? Can’t be all bad, then..I still think Hedley is good PR for McGinnis.

“Jeff” is waaaaay stupid — and selfish. He lost a job… and tossed Becca’s away, too… for $10.__Repeat… “Jeff” is waaaaay stupid….

Odd that a teaparty member would want to be called pokerface.

Time will tell all … and so will GT (it IS his venue, after all).

I think Jeff is delusional again. Thinking he still has an editor, publisher, or dad.

Would it be unkind or incorrect to comment that Jeff is a first ballot inductee into the Pathetic Loser Hall of Fame?

Be thankful there’s a “Jeff character”, he’s the only one some marginal types can feel superior to.

Jeff’s editor’s got a few problems of her own. No one MADE her give him the wrong manuscript.

You willing to throw in the work (aka: $$$) needed to fix ’em? Do that… and I might be able to find a buyer.
