Ray: Yes! Non-expired half-and-half! Life is good. Elias: Hey, Ray. Ray: Elias! Come in, come in! Elias: So how you making out, amigo? Ray: I'm doin' good, man-- glad to be out of B.D.'s hair and on my own. I know this place isn't much-- a beat-up couch, a few lamps and a hot plate-- but I feel safe here, man! And it's a start-- a fresh start-- thanks to you and the vet center! Elias: And we appreciate that, brother, but... Ray: But what? Elias: Well, this is our waiting room. Ray: I don't mind, man! Heck, I like guys dropping by!

Rerun, no?
DylanThomas3.14159 almost 12 years ago
But Ray, he’s wearin’ out his welcome. Politely ask Elias to leave.

Has to be a rerun. There’s a vertical copyright notice in small type between panels 5 & 6. Click anywhere on strip to enlarge to read. Says, “Universal Uclick © 2011 G. B. Trudeau.” At least a year ago.

it still is a shame of a nation that we have homeless veterans.
DylanThomas3.14159 almost 12 years ago
Hi babygirl, glad your wound is healing.

" You … don’t deserve our efforts to protect your freedom."
Most of the other commenters here have heard of satire.
montessoriteacher almost 12 years ago
Even if some would prefer to walk the streets over going to a shelter, I am sure no one wants to be homeless. Once the weather gets colder they all end up giving up the outside, otherwise they wouldn’t make it.
montessoriteacher almost 12 years ago
I knew you were being sarcastic right away, DT.

If you spent more time getting to know the regular commentators, you would understand DT pi’s sense of irony and humor, before taking umbrage at an assumed slam at us vets ( I am also a 2-tour Vietnam vet ) and immediately got the sarcasm intended in the comment. If you knew DT pi, the way many of us do, you would not be so quick to hurl uncalled for epithets. Because you are a relatively new contributor, I will take your knee-jerk reaction for what it was but I do think an apology is in order.

Everyone seems to still be on holiday… Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, Stephen Colbert, GT—- come back!
montessoriteacher almost 12 years ago
Ok. Sorry to expect so much. I guess I just miss him.

It seems a lot of people treat vets like they treat the unborn. When soldiers are in the service they are loved. Once they get out they are ignored. When a fetus is in the womb they insist it has a ‘right to life’ but once born it is ignored. Go figure.

Any place you can feel safe is home. And yes. I know this is a rerun. .as to sarcasm (not so much for satire) – I always remember this old phrase “sarcasm directed at strangers, usually goes over their heads.” …..
Mythreesons almost 12 years ago
Boy, oh boy!! Are you going to get slammed hard for this comment. Obviously you don’t know DTpi !!!
Mythreesons almost 12 years ago
I’ll be 81 on Jan 1. Are we the oldest commenters on Gocomics? Would be fun to know if we were. I always look for your comments, as we think alike. Maybe the age thing?

If you know anything about DT, you know that he is no fan of Cheney and W, your first clue that his post was dripping of sarcasm…
potrerokid almost 12 years ago
Some “people” don’t realize how good they have it; but, you told him. As for myself and my family, we thank you a whole lot for your service! My size & weight kept me out of the Service, to my regret. I just couldn’t gain any weight. Otherwise, I might just have been over there with you.

Panel 2 — which shows Ray sniffing the non-expired half-‘n’-half — is iconic Trudeau. You can tell the cartoonist loves this character. Despite his unfortunate condition and circumstances, Ray can still enjoy his life, even the simple things, in this case just something good to put in his coffee!

I find that I only feel safe and loved at the VA clinic near my home.

A few years back, the Washington Post invited readers to submit new words made from existing words with one letter added or changed. Among the best was “sarchasm,” the gap between the sarcastic person and the person who doesn’t get it.

my father and uncles served in WWII and korea. my brother and cousins served in viet nam. it doesn’t matter which president sent them or when, they still deserve our respect and care for their sacrifices…and DT you’re a jerk for thinking AND saying otherwise
pawpawbear almost 12 years ago
That kind of attack and language is totally uncalled for in this forum. I flagged your post and would ten times if it were possible. I have voted right for several elections now, but the more I listen to the rhetoric coming from the right these days, I have rethought my politics. You sir, are simply wrong today. I’m a Vietnam vet, also. I do not see the right doing me any favors what soever.
montessoriteacher almost 12 years ago
DT knows the vets deserve our respect and he did not say otherwise.

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton has now been hospitalized due to a blood clot. Doesn’t sound good at all…

The real problem for the Republicans about disabled vets since Desert Storm is how many actually made it home. In 10 years, there will be a backlash about the drain in medical service for them.
montessoriteacher almost 12 years ago
A transient ischemic attack, or TIA is very serious, if it is what Hillary has. In women, a TIA mimics the flu. Since I am a human being, I will not joke about President Bush being in poor health, even though I never voted for him.
DylanThomas3.14159 almost 12 years ago
I’ve had awhile to think about k9mac’s verbal attack on my satire (not meant as sarcasm) in favor of the vets and against the treatment that the government gives those who are disabled. I don’t feel like fighting or getting personal. Just let it go.
DylanThomas3.14159 almost 12 years ago
What I really feel badly about is the persistent attack on Hillary Clinton. She’s a human being who’s been injured. The almost daily attacks are serious.

In a public blog, there will always be people who say, qiite clearly and drectly, dreadful things, and others who write such dreadful thing as satire to expose the vile nature of those who espouse ideas generally agreed to be reprehensible, e.g. " A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift In a forum in which there are blithering bigots and thoughtful essayists, there will always be newcomers who take awhile to get the hang of who is who.
