Having an additional source of information does not mean your memory will shut down. I suspect certain chemicals might be messing up memory here. After all, we’re made of assorted chemicals.

This ‘argument’ has gone on for over 4,000 years.

(There’s an Egyptian inscription in which the Ibis-Headed God Toth gets ‘scolded’ by the Great God for inventing writing, He claims he has developed a ‘Medicine for Memory’ but the Great God points out that NOW Men need only write it down, rather than store it within. . . . And this is an improvement, how?)

I get why he only does Sundays…The old ones are hard to read

Yeah, his songs had lyrics that made sense and told a story, an actual melody that was pleasant on your ears and a volume that didn’t offend your eardrums. Unlike the drivel that is offered today.

I have a set of CDs that has some of the earliest recorded music. The oldest on it is from 1890, The United States Marine Corp Band playing “The Washington Post March”. Some of the songs from the late teens and early 20s were quite dirty. Not by today’s standards, but I was quite surprised at the innuendos.

It takes literacy and creativity to deal in innuendo and double entendre, rather than just shouting every dirty word you know.

“Could” includes the concept of “could not” too.

Maybe he went to one of those schools where they “teach you how to learn” rather than “facts” (or, as they call it, “teaching to some standardized test”)

Most schools now use computers, whether they teach to a standardized test or not.

I still have not seen anyone with google glasses in person. They say self driving cars are coming. I just saw a report on something called smart shoes, which have a built in gps. This could be helpful to many in the future. More smart products are coming, computers in boxes will be something which we won’t have around soon, as more smart products come along.

I am sure that using gps could be a problem for some. For others, such as the visually impaired, it could be quite helpful. A cane can only do so much to help and some are allergic to dogs.

I disagree — I used to have to remember a couple of dozen phone numbers. Now they’re in my phone and I couldn’t tell you without looking it up what my wife’s number is. But that doesn’t mean my memory is worse.

@doublejakeI still enter the certain phone numbers on the keypad instead of using the contact list so I won’t forget them.

I had not heard about a gyroscope feature on smart shoes. I think it is just something which is intended as a suggested route, like other gps machines. I have an intelligent child who never could ride a bike due to balance issues. They now have a bike with a gyroscope wheel which assists with balance. It is battery operated and can be turned down so that you gradually learn to balance and eventually can ride a regular bike.

I understand that GT is pointing out that people can get too reliant on technology, I just think it is important to remember that in this amazing new world, we are lucky to have options and many would not have had those options in the past. This should continue in the future. I am reminded of a routine by Chris Rock, in which he speaks of the sadness of Stevie Wonder not being able to see and the paralysis of Christopher Reeves. Can’t we just let Stevie have a little peek? and Superman can’t walk?!

I absolutely LOVE this! If you’ve never seen it, it’s completely worth 5 minutes of your time to watch. It’s a powerful message at how we’re ignoring our lives and the real people in them because we’re too busy looking down at the electronic gadgets in our hands, putting “social” media of ALL kinds with virtual strangers ahead of everyone and everything else around us instead of actually living life the ways it’s meant to be lived.

There are 2 especially poignant things the video says that I really like and which are so true:

1.) “It’s not very likely you’ll make ’World’s Greatest Dad’ if you can’t entertain a child without using an iPad.”

2.) “So look up from your phone, shut down those displays, we have a finite existence, a set number of days. Don’t waste your life gettin’ caught in the net, as when the end comes, nothing’s worse than regret.”

Of course, no one in this world would ever use that knowledge for nefarious purposes, right?”.Actually, GPS doesn’t automatically tell anyone where you are. GPS simply compares time signals from assorted satelites and determines how far away from each one it must be, then knowing where each one was when the signal was sent, figures out where it must be to be that far from each one. There need be no two way transmission to let anyone else know you are receiving the signals or even that you exist..Not that everyone couldn’t know where you were from other sources, just that most don’t really care.

No, my point was that your point is foolish. If my phone fails, I won’t need the number. Remembering the number is useless if I can’t call it.
