Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for August 20, 2014
Transcript:
Rick: Joanie, you were supposed to be catching up on a little sleep, not out buying groceries! Joanie: Well, I couldn't believe your refrigerator! All you had was TV dinners and Dr. Pepper! Rick: Which I love! Nonetheless, this is without question the best dinner I've had all fall! Joanie: Thank you, Rick. I'm pretty good at breakfast, too. As the kid goes for broke.
BE THIS GUY over 10 years ago
The look of shock on Rick’s face explains why he is single; he has no instincts far as women are concerned.

A fully liberated woman was risque for 1976

One of Doonesbury’s all-time great punch-lines.

The next few days should re-run one of the most famous (and, during the original run, controversial) multi-day sequences in the history of the strip.

Ah, memories!

If she’s fully liberated, how come she’s automatically doing the shopping and cooking?
Rick’s been unemployed for some time now. Wonder whether he’s learned to cook yet.
MiepR over 10 years ago
Also whether Trudeau’s learned to draw wine glasses yet.

Yes, I remember Mateus. And Lambrusco, the butt of many wine jokes, and a metaphor for questionable taste.
pathfinder over 10 years ago
If I remember correctly, (and that may not be the case) Lambrusco was a sparkling wine and came in a deep green bottle. Mateus Rose came in a VERY different shape bottle.

… And yes, the taste was pretty questionable.

This being 1976 the tv dinners were in aluminum trays and heated in the oven for about half an hour.

So, will GoComics give us the multi-day swoop into the bedroom window, or just cut straight to the morning-after strip?

This is the same woman who left her husband and child, and wants to set up housekeeping with another man? Isn’t that where the saying, “jump out of the frying pan into the fire”, comes from?

Lambrusco was a red. (drank much of it in my teens; imagine I’d find it a tad sweet these days) Maeus was the rosé (tasy6ed it once – pure swill)

This is as sweet now as it was 38 years ago.

I approve of that rant.

Gave up on wine glasses years ago. Lowball glass works just as well and doesn’t tip or break as easily.

Anybody remember Lancer’s? Or Blue Nun?.As a bar manager. I once got a bottle of BN that had missed being filled, but was corked and capped. One of my distributors came in, looked at it, and said “That’s the best bottle of Blue Nun you’ll ever see.”

And how could Canadians forget Fuddle Duck? Named for a distant relative of the cartoonist.

GT has gave Joannie some of the best one-liners in the strip

Not a rant; good to see that there are a lot of nonstereotypical folks out here…

I have a beautiful set of tiny wine glasses — which were considered best for white wine back before the wheel.

Anyone else remember Mateus?Rose?…. that and Baby Duck were the first forays into the liqueur store. And don’t forget the Southern Comfort.love Joanie’s quiet statement. She’s playing bold.

I have remembered this single strip for decades and have always thought this was one of the best moments in comics. Well done!
