Martin: Welcome back to Palm Beach, madam. Your suite is ready! Lacey: Thank you, Martin. I'll also be requiring a suite for Mr. Royce here. Martin: Um... madam wants a suite for her manservant? Lacey: For her legislative assistant, yes. Martin: Are you sure he wouldn't be more comfortable staying on the mainland?
The sad reality is that faces of color are still very unusual when you cross the bridge from ‘mainland’ Florida to the Town of Palm Beach, Manalapan and the other wealthy towns. A few years ago, an African American law prof who had given a lecture at a Palm Beach conference tried to ride a bicycle along the island, and he was repeatedly pulled over by police asking what he was doing there…
