Narrator: On a blustery winter day, in Lower Manhattan... deep in the bowels of a changing East Village... just around the corner from Fat Freddy's Deli on Avenue B. a couple of y-people are digging in. JJ: Keep scrapping, Mike! It's... it's oak! We've struck oak!

Y-people? That’s an ’80s expression I somehow missed out on.

Mike and JJ were real urban pioneers. Avenue B isn’t the East Village: it’s Alphabet City and it was at least 10 years away from gentrification when this strip was originally published.

The image of the Twin Towers – even in a cartoon – stirs very strong feelings inside me.

I restore 19th century wood railroad cars. Believe it or not in the 19th century oak was considered undesireable. It was frequently painted and faux grained to look like mahogany. The Craftsman movement came along and turned oak into a desired finish….

The major plus factors, when we restored my railroad apartment in the West Village in the early’60’s was that underneath the threadbare, ratty carpet, was tongue and groove maple wood flooring,
It also had the only working fireplace in the building – very handy when the landlord’s crazy son, occasionally turned off the heat, in the dead of winter !
