I have lived in th south bay area my whole 57 year life, only 20 miles from the epicenter and closer to the ‘89 “Worlds Series” quake than San Fran 50 miles to my north. I was standing in a parking lot trying to keep my balance while it hit and made the ground seem to sway and jerk softly, and I can say the earthquake itself was dead silent. No loud rumbling or violent shaking as you see greatly exaggerated in movies and TV dramas. All that occurred at my house was some stuff fell off a shelf and a friend lost some water in his salt water fish tank when it experienced it’s own mini “tidal wave”. That’s how it was for 99.99% of the bay area population. I’ll take the rockin’ & rollin’ over hurricanes, tornadoes and snow blizzards ANY day.
