Ah, the relentless optimism of youth. In my opinion, one of the saddest things about war is how it turns boys into prematurely scarred and seasoned men. But then, what’s really happy about war?
Anyone else remember way back when Zonker had to register for the Draft? He was relieved that it was handled by The Post Office, but he was a bit disconcerted by the final question on the draft form: “Would you be willing to go to War to protect the Interests of American Oil Companies around the world?”
AMAZING how Trudeau called it SO CORRECTLY ALL THE WAY BACK in the Vietnam Era…
This is true. Original plans for our invasion had it labelled Operation Iraqi Liberation until someone in the Bush administration noticed what the acronym would be, at which point they changed the last word to Freedom instead.
Doonesbury used to be funny and ironic and this strip is a perfect example. Now when Doonesbury takes up Trump it’s just obvious and not funny. He lost his edge.
Any normal vet who has lived through combat and experienced the bureaucratic bullsh*t and the military mindlessness of the brass, would be as jaded as B.D.
I never met an optimistic combat vet.
At the end of my two tours in Vietnam, I had not only become completely cynical but became, like many of my contemporaries and fellow vets, very active in the VVAW ( Vietnam Vets Against the War ). To this day, I believe that no person should have to face the horrors of war – be they civilian or military. And I strongly believe our prolonged involvement in the Middle East is misguided and a criminal waste of lives for the profit of the oil oligarchies.

Name me one war, at any time and any place, that was waged for noble purposes.

Ugh, I lived through this war back then. Not willing to relive it, especially since in many ways it hasn’t really ended…
