Most readers are too young to remember when a TV’s remote control really was a clicker, i.e. made a clicking noise. It had 4 buttons, volume ↑ and ↓ and channel ↑ and ↓. Each button drove a hammer that struck a piece of metal that resonated at an ultrasonic frequency, and the user heard a “click”. Only the super-rich could afford them.

I had a tv so old it’s remote was cpmpressed air. You pushed a plunger and forced air through a tube. That moved the channel dial one step up. Couldn’t go backwards.

TV was not around when I was a child. My first “remote TV” had a device that ran across the floor from seat to TV. The first TV I saw was one that the family bought for my paternal Gma (who was somewhat disabled) and we got a Raytheon when I was a teen. My dad cut a hole in the wall between kitchen and spare room and installed a turn-table so we could watch it in either room. He was rather creative that way with a few things (as I have been myself).
