When my son was six, we had to fly to across the country to Philadelphia for a wedding. We reserved three months in advance, got 3 seats together. Then at some point they switched to a smaller airplane for the return flight and scrambled the seat assignments, so all 3 of our seats at least six rows apart. And the agent was no help whatsoever. She blamed “the computer”, and said there was nothing she could do. We had to deal with the other passengers to get one seat switched so our boy could sit with mom. So since then we’ve boycotted that airline (14 years and counting).
