I assembled a 12×8′ greenhouse two years ago. 16 pages of warnings in 16 languages. 43 pages of diagrams, no words at all. Some of the diagrams were wrong.
More and more of the instructions don’t have words. It’s kind of a good thing since most are written by someone with a limited command of the English language.
Once built a dry sink from plans in my woodworking magazine. The door opening and the door measurements were wrong. The picture showed an inset door but the measurements for the door and opening were for an overlay door. DIY can’t be interesting.
That’s essential.y what a user’s guide is. A reference manual describes what each action does, but a user’s guide tells what actions you need to get a particular task done. In other words, the user’s guide is a manual for the reference manual.
I feel for Ralph; I really do. I have been unable figure out how to brighten my dashboard lights on my 2006 Ford Escape when driving at night with the headlights on. The manual did not address this. But after reading this comic, I was moved to do a search online and finally figured hour how to find the adjustment switch!!! Now I will be able to see how fast I am going at night! (I have been using the relative position of the speedometer needle rather than seeing the numbers for the last 16 years, but fortunately I rarely drive at night these days.)

Once they told you how to set the timing, etc. Now they tell you not to drink the battery acid.

I miss owner’s manuals from Japanese Motorcycle manufacturers in the ’50’s and ’60’s.

The manual of my new off brand was hard to figure out. I am just fortunate it is actually intuitive enough for me to resolve one minor user problem.
