Whenever my sister gets me involved with a lengthy (and usually uninteresting) IM discussion, I finally send the thumbs up emoji, signaling that I am done.
I imagine the vast majority of people that use LOL didn’t actually. Laugh out loud, that is. It’s used to distraction now. More like a knee jerk reaction. In some cases it simply means “Yes, I’ve read it”
