Let’s not lose track of the narrative here. He’s equating lying to protect someone’s feelings as being the same as lying to convince his wife he’s a loving husband and good provider for the family when in reality he’s a closet alcoholic.
There are damaging lies and there are non-damaging ones. It’s a huge difference.

He is correct. Studies have repeatedly shown that hardly anyone exists in the world who does not tell a lie from time to time.
