She should’ve told that spoiled brat to pick up her backpack and get on the bus or she would be grounded. Who’s she gonna con into carrying it for her when she gets off the bus?

“Kid, Get on the bus. If you miss it, you won’t be driven. If the school calls, we won’t ask that it be an excused absence. You will deal with the consequences.”

Or, “fine, kid, backpack stays home and you get on bus. YOU explain to teachers you aren’t big enough or willing enough to carry your books.”

And, why does being responsible mean she gets to be driven, Abby?

And Ally is a psychiatrist? Obviously not a very good one.

I’m actually with Abby on this—this wasn’t the time for having that fight, and it WOULD be a fight, because past experience has shown that Carly isn’t the type to give in to something like this without first making a whole lot of noise and refusing to go anywhere. So she TOTALLY would’ve missed the bus, and given that both of her parents have busy work schedules themselves, it really would’ve only caused more problems than it solved.

I totally get Len’s point and agree with him too, but part of being a parent is knowing when to pick your battles and know when to not let your own stubbornness get the better of you. Better to wait until Carly comes home from school and THEN put the foot down when you no longer have a time limit to consider (as well as give all parties time to adjust and plan ahead to the change as needed).

Just have her start getting ready a half hour earlier until she proves she’s responsible enough to get herself and her backpack on the bus. Perhaps they could get her a little wagon to carry it to the bus. It wouldn’t take long before the laughter of her peers would make her figure it out herself.

How far away is the school, in Austin no bus if less than 2 miles?
