So in panel 2 the paint-spattered figure looks humanoid — head, jawline, shoulder, and arm. We still don’t know yet whether it’s dittoes that have taken that shape and made themselves invisible, or some entity we haven’t seen yet in this strip until now.
Regarding Duffy’s comment about Benny, we-the-readers still don’t know whether Benny is really dead or just captured. Either way, Duffy is either being brave or being foolish, wanting to take on that thing with a knife.
First it was the business with Wally and the top brass not wanting him to do actual work at the site. Now it’s camouflaged topsiders abducting people. Could the 2 events be related somehow?
Duffy said that a woman has been screaming and crying there since the early days of the colony. Topsiders would have wiped out Eden long ago. It’s not evident that the boys are hearing screaming now. Maybe Benny was taken as a sacrifice to what’s screaming. Or maybe Benny would be screaming next. Maybe I have no idea, but am blathering on because I’m gripped by the story.
I can’t remember where I got the impression that dittos “cloak” things via illusion (like the Shadow used to). It makes much more sense for them to operate in a cloud and to manipulate all of the electromagnetic spectrum. This would include visible light and radio waves (including radar). It would also work on video feeds—since Topsiders see everything through video. This would still mean that they would not be stcking to the person they were hiding—so throwing paint on them still wouldn’t work.
Plus, the first thing Duffy does is reach for the shiv and murder walks towards this apparition in the name of vengeance- I’m liking this kid more and more.
I didn’t know Topsiders could do that. If this is somehow some kind of ‘arrangement’ between the colony and the Topsiders that the kids have blundered into this could be real, real bad. Especially if they manage to kill the one in question. Either way I will safely wager the Topsider is NOT unarmed and some of Duffy’s gang are about to die.

Looks a lot like topsider armor in that panel. Perhaps the Topsiders are monitoring this colony, and the beach is their “collection box” for samples.

Methinks that that panther cub is about to make a very rash (and possibly fatal) mistake.

If it is a topsider the last thing Benny should do is cut him. Once his armor is compromised he’ll turn into a monster.

Looks like a ditto representation of a Topsider.

Perhaps the Topsiders have learned to use dittos?

chain? We’ve gone from Leave It to Beaver, to Twilight Zone, and are now moving into West Side Story (without the dancing). I love this strip. :-)

Wow, this is like a callback to every juvenile delinquent movie made between the 1920s and the 1960s. Why is it always about Benny?

So, when Duffy’s original instruction to Chic was to get an audio recording of the ghost, he really meant to say: “Stand there and be bait.”
