The first six months are the worst, IF the kid practices enough to get past the squeaks and squawks phase. If not, the torture goes on and on. My folks were happy that all three kids chose to play drums, and lived on a farm with practice space in one of the grain barns…..
In an old movie, Steve Allen played Benny Goodman in “The Benny Goodman Story.” While Goodman played most of the clarinet lines in the movie (especially at the end, where he himself appeared with his band), when it came to a young Benny getting his first clarinet, he couldn’t recreate those goose honks for love or money. So during that scene, you actually hear Steve Allen playing clarinet on the soundtrack.
