In my time in “the business world”, I generally found that the people most talented at self-promotion rarely had other talents. It made not hiring them very easy. And, before you reply, I always felt there was a big difference between genuine self-confidence, and self-promotion..
I remember an interview for a job developing computer operating systems. I spoke with one of the technical leads for an hour and a half, and at the end he said to me, “I believe you can do the job, though nothing on your resume indicates this. How can that be?” To which I answered, “I read a lot.” I got the job.
It worked for a former coworker of mine. Despite not having a college degree or certifications, and only having two years of work experience, he convinced our non-technical managers to hire him as an engineer. Then he kept baffling them with bull to keep up his ruse… the managers expected me to clean up his messes, and refused to consider that they’d made a poor hiring decision…
A few years later, thanks to more poor management decisions, the company was in a cash flow crisis. They decided to lay off staff… I was told that they’d decided to lay me off and keep the BS coworker because he was “the future of the company”… They were right, in a way – he helped lead them deeper into their sinkhole, and without me (or anybody else) to clean up his messes he quit before they fired him – all within a month after I was gone… the whole company was belly-up just a few months later…

Looks like a scene from Office Space. I wouldn’t say I “missed” work last week…

Must be how the interviewer got his job.
I once did get a job over more qualified applicants because my potential boss thought I would be more interesting to work with.

Maybe the interviewer realizes that the pay can be substantially lower

After the worker shortage I just observed in a restaurant we dined at tonight; I’d say as long as he is breathing – hire him!
