    Lay-offs and lay-ons, but no more lay-arounds.

This is actually a thing – companies with high turnover and deep pockets preemptively hire additional resources to prevent projects from running behind schedule. If you hear the words “Agile”, “Scrum”, or “PI Planning” during an interview – RUN!

Reminds me of a joke. Because of budget cuts, a manager has to let one of two employees, Jack and Jill, go. They were both good workers which made it a very difficult decision for him to lay Jill or Jack off.

I worked as an electronics systems engineer and software developer at different times. Technical jobs are highly contract-based. Layoffs at end of contract are just something you plan for. Expect to change jobs every 3 to 5 years, especially if you are ambitious. Always keep your resume in circulation. Occasionally, over the decades, there were six months to a year intervals where no one was hiring anyone regardless of skills. Plan accordingly.
