Elly: That was Grandpa on the phone. He's got a little dog now! Elizabeth: I know. April told me. I'm going down to Club Soda for a while, OK? Elly: Elizabeth, it's a week night! Elizabeth: I'm in grade 13, Mom! If we lived in Manitoba, I'd be in university! I'd be living in residence right now - I'd be able to go anywhere an' I wouldn't have to ask anybody!! Elly: I didn't say you couldn't go - I just said it was a week night. Elizabeth: Oh. Elly: When you've prepared a good defense...it's hard not to use it.
I doubt Elizabeth would just say “Oh”. Why else would mom say “it’s a weeknight”, unless she disapproved? She might as well say "It’s a day that ends in “Y”, if she was just making idle conversation.
