Gary: Teaching up north is different from the city, Liz. We bend the rules a little and make new ones. As long as our students learn what they need to know, we can be creative and invent things that aren't in the curriculum. Elizabeth: Like? Gary: What's the average number of leaves on a sumac branch? Name and spell six species of tree. Where do mosquitoes come from? Why does smoke go up? There, you have math, spelling, biology and practical science - and it's all relevant to this community. Elizabeth: Why are we still fishing when there are no fish? Gary: Now that, my friend, is "philosophy!"
That, ideally, is education.
