I have to agree with Lightenup. And I can understand your family being harder to give a speech to (or in this case read your own writing to).than “strangers”.
I wish I’d asked my grandparents questions about their childhoods but never bothered. As a kid or teen you’re too involved in your own life to care about theirs. But later on you wish you’d gotten to know them better.
Sounds like a variation on Jesus’ observation that a prophet is rejected in their hometown. Likewise, those who knew us from day one sadly seem prone to shoot down any sory of accomplishment with, “But I knew you when you were in diapers”.
Nonetheless, the creative should and must persevere.
Ah… I remember my parents telling me stories about when they were young. I really wish now that they had written them all down. I always enjoyed their stories.

Speaking from experience, there is nothing more nerve-racking than giving your work to your spouse. (Even if, as in my case, he never reads it! ;) )
