Why does it seem like Elizabeth’s age keeps changing from week to week. One week she is a toddler speaking a few words, the next barely out of infancy, the next a toddler who is speaking full sentences.
@sabbathunter, those gifted with high verbal intelligence are sometimes full of surprises. Often they skip baby talk. I know a girl who had her family worried, since she hadn’t spoken (where anyone could hear) until age 3. Her first words were, “Don’t worry Mom, it’ll evaporate.” after knocking over her glass of milk. (Yes, we know milk makes a big mess when it “evaporates”. She was only 3, and a verbal, not chemistry genius.)
I had an uncle who didn’t talk until he was 6. He would point at things and grunt. One day, his mother got mad and told him he should just ask like everyone else did. His response: “May I have a glass of water, please?”
One time we lived across the street from a family with two boys. The younger boy didn’t talk until he was four, because his brother interpreted for him. Seems to me it gave both boys a feeling of power and importance, like they had a secret their parents didn’t know. When he finally talked, it was in complete sentences, too! As long as he didn’t have to speak, he chose not to. That was all there was to it!
Our kids skipped baby talk because we never spoke baby talk to them. Instead we spoke to them like we would any other person. They all were speaking in complete sentences by about 18 months.
Of course, that was when they were in reasonable moods. Any kid who really wants something or gets hurt will regress, especailly if Mom is around. It always used to bemuse me how they could hurt themselves around me and act very like it was no big deal, until Mom walked in and then they’d fall to pieces, even if it was an hour later.
Her eyes are already out of her head, but we can’t see her mouth.
When I was that age, my Grandmother let me sit and help her in the garden. She showed me how to plant things. Elly can do the same. She may have to redo them, but that’s how kids learn, even at that age. She can make it something positive, but she rarely ever seizes that opportunity.
Magasek, they did that based on your (and her) expected reactions. Kids DO learn fast, they want the loving concern that Mom will give, and act stoic with you because you had previously given them some praise for that…
X-D LOLs! I love the way Elly popped out her eyes from her face while Lizzie dug new plants out of the ground and talked smoothly. WOW! Lizzie finally talked! :-D
Speaking of rapid aging I seem to remember April growing awfully fast, as well as Mike’s and Deanna’s children. (It was children wasn’t it?) If you’re going to make a comic dynamic and show people at different stages in life you have to do this. I think it’s going to be fun seeing Liz at this next stage.
Farly looks like he’s trying very hard to be tied up.
I Loved this strip because it reminded me of when my kids were young and could do so much damage in the garden in a minute. My son once went out and pulled off all the heads of the daisies and brought them in to me as a bouquet! Do your eyes bug out, yes. Do you give him a kiss and say how beautiful. Yes! I think this strip only shows when Lizzie and Farley first showed up, not how Elly sat Lizzie down in the dirt and showed her how to plant later. The strip only shows a snapshot, not the whole picture and the snapshot is made to be exaggerated and humorous.
Oooh, my son did this one to me last year. I was pulling weeds and he decided to “help” me. The next thing I knew he had pulled my favorite mum out by the roots. I got it replanted, but it just hasn’t been the same since. Didn’t bloom at all last year, and looks awfully scrawny this year. =[
cutiepie29 : Heh! My HUSBAND once helped me in this manner. Came in and told me proudly that he had just pulled out the weeds for me. Those “weeds” inclulded zinnia and marigold plants :) I sometimes wonder if I have three kids instead of two :P

b. It’s the father’s fault.
John is probably on a ladder painting a bedroom, or with a snake cleaning out the sewer, or fixing the car. (or sacked out on the couch)

It’s so nice to get here in time to see only nice friendly comments.
She’s growing up so fast that she’ll probably be able to really help by the end of the week.
