Millions have died for refusing to renounce our mythology. If it was all a myth, I wonder why the first ones didn’t just plainly admit that it was all a ruse rather than be thrown to the lions…
I’m having a case of deja vu here: I remember this comic from about 20 years ago. But I think it was Elizabeth that time. I can see why she brought it back, though, it is a classic!
@aircraft-engineer - I’m sure someone else can say it better than I, but really isn’t everything dogma, myth and superstition? Even things that have been proven to be so have exceptions or have been proven otherwise later. I find your bitterness sad.
The death and resurrection of Yeshua ben Joseph in the 1st century is one of the most well-documented events in human history, even if you exclude the biblical narrative. There were eyewitnesses to both events who were not followers of Jesus and had no reason to embellish the facts. (See the writings of Josephus.) Add to this the fact that the early Christians were willing to die for their faith. There aren’t too many people willing to die to perpetuate a myth. I would say that the evidence speaks for itself.
The only thing I take exception to is that Jesus’ death was a tragedy that should have somehow been prevented. It was NOT a tragedy, it was a triumph. Jesus CHOSE to let these things happen to him. He could have stopped it at any time and did not. He GAVE his life for us, it was not taken away from him. Because of his voluntary sacrifice, all of us have the opportunity to be reconciled to a holy God in spite of our sins (and don’t kid yourself, we all sin in one way or another). His resurrection proved that he had power over death itself. HE IS RISEN!
Jesus was crucified with the nails on his hands on the wooden cross. He died on the cross and His blood washed all our sins away. He was buried in the tomb. After three days, He is Risen. That would be sooo blessed. We can have our faiths growing better a little bit by a little bit. May God bless all of us to remember about Jesus, a wonderful Son of God. Happy Easter Day!
Documentation other than Biblical is still based on accounts of those who wrote the Bible. A person who taught and had radical ideas was probably out there, but he probably wasn’t the only one. The rest is just faith and unproveable. Explorers searching for the New World died trying to get there, spurred on by only their belief that it was actually out there somewhere.
I heard that Easter had been canceled this year. Yeah, they found the body.
Darkeforce said, “Jesus not dying wouldn’t have changed the meaning and importance of his teachings and philosophy…”
No, the chirch did that all on its own. Current christianity is as much Paulist as it is Christian.
Whether one believes or not, from a doctrinal point of view, the sacrifice and resurrection of the Christ is the central mystery of all Christian religions, whether Catholic, Orthodox or Protestant. To somehow expunge that would collapse the whole foundation of those religions.
He is alive and I am forgiven. Heaven’s doors are open wide,
Offhand I can’t think of the rest of that hymn, but those lines are my favorite part.
Happy Easter everyone.
WIZODD, sorry, but I have to disagree with your statement that “religion is at the root of nearly all violence which is organized in our societies.”
“Religion” is man made, not God made, and man is jealous of everything that is not his. if your neighbor has a nicer house and yard, what do you do? You play “keepin’ up with the Jones’!” If your kid brings home a less than perfect report card, you (in the generic sense) blame the teacher or the school system. We teach this to our children from the cradle and then wonder why the world is going to Hell in a handbag!? Is it any wonder, when you apply these principles to a government, why there is war and famine and genocide? You’ve got and I don’t, so I’m going to kill you to get what you have. Governments are people also. People are at the root of ALL violence, but they are very good at deflecting the blame (or having someone else do it for them) away from themselves.

But if you did that Micheal, your entire mythology would be altered. No martyr, no religion.

That was sweet. And Michael also tried to protect his teddy bear from the difficult part.
Happy Easter to everyone, whether you believe or not.

A two thousand year episode of fraud would tend to create a touch of bitterness.

Today’s strip (rerun) has generated a very interesting string of comments - thank you, Lynn!
My own is to quote Oswald Chambers, “The Cross is the center of time and eternity - the answer to the enigmas of both.”
He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!!
