I was in a Stressco superstore on Wednesday and passed a young teenage girl effing away with her mother who wasn’t in the least bit concerned at the language her Chav was using. Back when this strip was drawn there were better standards.
If people don’t want their kids to pick up foul language off of TV, all they got to do it is quit using it except for the movies they buy or pick out at the library.
just pointing out (though few will probably see this so far down) that Elly handled this wrong at her age…often at Elizabeth’s age, they don’t know it’s a bad word, and to act shocked or such makes them actually more likely to do it (when they want the attention)…better really to just calmly say “we’re not supposed to say that”. It sounds weird, but from my experience working at a daycare, it works a LOT better.
Funny the discussion should be about this today. I just went to AOL, and the “Welcome” page looked like *The Hustler." I like a lot of the features on AOL, but am going to have to look up how to get a different mix of articles on it, if possible.
If it weren’t for the History channel and Twilight Zones on SciFi I’d delete the TV services altogether. Evening news is only thing we watch on network TV anymore – the list of sitcoms has exhausted their material. (Plus the Weather Channel)
Late night shows? You haven’t watched much tv of late have you? Its all over the place. Just for one example, check out “Two and a Half Men”. DISGUSTING!
Where did most of us old farts pick up our filthy tongues? Why, from kids just a year or two older than we. TV, back in its infancy, didn’t have nudity, partial or otherwise, or any cussin’!
Yes, I had other than cable (On-TV and other options) back in really early days and had channels I did NOT allow to the kids back in the 60s! I also did not use any inapprropriate language for them either. I had all 4 kids between 1960 and 1965, so there were things that I protected them from!
The sitcom “Porridge” was hailed as a masterpiece of observation in that it accuately reflected life in one of Her Majesty’s Prisons. This was even though convicts (and the wardens) swear a lot and you couldn’t easily swear to that degree on TV, before 9:oo, in the 1970’s. the phrase “Naff!” (as in “Naff off!”, “this is naffing awful”, et c) was invented for the purpose, or so the scriptwriters thought. Then royalty – ~Princess Anne – took the phrase up, using it at hacks and photogrphers, and it was discovered “Naff auf!” is a middle-ranking swear in Afrikaans. And then the sci-fi parody “Red Dwarf” invented the swear word “Smeg!” for all purposes, taking a rather unpleasant term from a medical dictionary and shoterning it. “Smeg” also turned out in the end to be an Italian maker of kitchen furniture…
I will never understand why parents won’t allow their kids to swear if they think its ok for themselves to do it. I don’t see swearing/cursing as acceptable behavior for myself, so my children will know that and understand that their parents don’t hold double standards.

Entirely possible, unfortunately…especially on cable or Dish.

I may be in my late 20s, but I caught myself (in a good way) saying “Oh, snap!” from Disney Channel show “That’s So Raven.” I still even say it.

Part of the reason televisions left our home 14 years ago, or thereabouts.

Y’all remember reading about the fuss raised over Gone With the Wind, when Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) said “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a d***”.

Very true. Set a bad example and reap the consequences.

And Canadian TV is still more permissive than the US version.

She was probably watching what now passes as “family entertainment”.

As I was using Spanish, I used “rayos” or such when my kids were still young. I did not ever swear until I was driving.

A much more realistic thing for Michael to say would have been “from you, mom.”
