He said, “[We] got enough,” Michael, not “[I]’ve got enough.” (You other commentators should watch “Down and Derby” which is about over-competitive Pinewood Derby dads; it has Pat Morita from the original “Karate Kid” series.)
My Dad built my late brother an me a cart when we were small. We must have covered miles on it and whizzed down hills like were doubles in the bobsleigh event. Happy days. And we didn’t need any competitions to take part in.
NOT IN MY HOUSE! My brother and my dad do lots of things together… and if anyone walks out its my brother the one who finishes the job, but that hardly ever happens…
janinabarnes has the right idea. It’s all in how you raise them. I involved my kids in all sorts of projects including racing go karts. In every endeavor though, either they contributed or it didn’t fly. All turned out productive, skilled and talented. Like janinabarnes daughter, my oldest son started out at my hobby bench before he was 5. He’s now one of the top techs. at a vintage race car shop in CT.
Not all kids like to do projects with their dads. Mine was grumpy to begin with, and any project with him would involve my standing there terrified, trying to do what I was told long enough that I wouldn’t get yelled at too much and could go away and be alone. It wasn’t like there was ever fun to it.
Shame. My father should have known loads of stuff I wanted to learn. Learned how to change a tire (I was the fastest in class) in school, but would have loved to pick up “boy” hobbies, yet couldn’t go asking other kids’ dads to teach.

Ahh… everybody knows that the best part of building a go-cart is the test driving part!

I never participated in a go-kart, but did build and race a pinewood.

Not like the old days (1950s) when kids figured out how to put surplus Maytag engines on bicycles – on their own.

Father-Son bonding time….not so much…

In my childhood, that would have been me with the wood, and my father muttering something about not killing myself as he was busy practicing piano.

I thought all boys Michael’s age liked to do projects like this with their dads!
