I’ve begun to notice how cartoonists have lately have their characters doing things that have nothing to do with the joke at hand instead of just standing there reciting dialogue. Notice in the first panel John pouring a drink and in the second panel handing it to his Phil.
Lynn’s Notes:Before he bit the bullet and proposed to Joan, Alan did ask us a lot of questions about things like cohabitation, home ownership, the right to go fishing if he wanted to. One really good thing was that we had come from a very solid home. Sure, our folks had their ups and downs. They both came from very different backgrounds and were often at odds with each other, but they lived in an era when you saw it through to the end. Marriage was more than a contestable contract – it was, “’til death do you part.” ..Too many people now think of marriage as just that – a contract, that can be broken when one person doesn’t think it’s going well. Too bad children grow up, and work out your problems.
Generally, many agree that in cases where people are in danger, such as wife beating or drug abuse, or something grave such as adultery, marriages can and should end. That is also authorized by the Bible. But as was pointed out, too many people buy into the “no-fault divorce” as well as the idea of a disposable marriage – if it ain’t working out, just throw it away. Too bad kids get stuck in the middle of it and are too young to move out.
