it is the thought that counts my boy, besides how much do you think your mother is worth bringing you life, feeding you, keeping you clean, and all the other things she does?
my daughter once bought my Mom a jump rope for her birthday, of course my mom never used it, she let my daughter play with it when we were visiting, and when she passed away we found that jump rope in her closet. She always said that was the best gift she ever got.
Only money I EVER received from my Father was my allowance and I always had to think ahead for birthdays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Christmas for gifts, had very little to spend on my self.
The difference is that Michael is old enough to start learning fiscal responsibility — and that includes thinking about something other than his immediate self-gratification.
In a later strip, teenage Michael and Liz do a bunch of chores. Elly takes them as her Mother’s Day gift, but they’d both forgotten; they thought they’d be paid.
This is an opportunity for Mike to learn to put others ahead of himself. Elly will be happy that he spent his money on her and showed maturity and responsibility. Even if John had to push him into it.

Depending on how much change you have left, Mikey. Like if all you have is a penny, I think it won’t buy her a gum ball or something.

Actually, Michael, go to your local comic book shop tomorrow and you’ll be able to get comic books for FREE!

Michael, buy your mom Komix. Then you can read them when she’s done.

Uh, No. You get the Whoopie bar, Mike. the rest will buy something nice for Mom. Guess you’ll have to do more work to get those komix books.

I’m happiest with something my kids make (5, 7 & 9). They didn’t make me anything last year because we were on a trip, so I hope they do this year!
OTOH, if he has some really good comics, he could let Elly read them. I’d love that!
