He’s only thinking of a costume that he could wear, not costumes for anyone else, or a way to save the theater. At this point in his life, Michael is only concerned with one thing: Michael.
The alternative could be to use the building as a haunted house fundraiser. We did that with the local 1928 movie palace until we renovated all of the safe spooky places out of existence. Now the only really spooky places are in the sub-basement or back passages that are not safe enough for that type of activity. At one time they were going to knock the theatre down for a parking lot and convert the hotel portion into senior apartments-seniors not interested as the room were like 12×15 feet. Citizen engagement in 1970s saved the building and currently is a prime venue for a variety of shows including education for kids. Currently hotel is being gutted for offices, conference rooms, rehearsal space and a two floor ballroom with rooftop garden. Embassy Theatre, Fort Wayne, IN.
Since everyone loves spoilers, here are a couple of hints:*Elly uses the library’s money to solve her theatre problem. Later on down the line she gets the reputation of being a big spender with other people’s money.*The observation that if ship was to go down, Michael could have cared less if everyone else went down with it, is an accurate one. It was seen in a story where an emergency occurred. Michael’s first thoughts were not of his wife or children, but of Michael. (I wonder if the author was inspired by the Seinfeld episode of George’ cowardice in the fire?)
