Reminds me of the time when I was a wee lad of 5 or 6 summers. My mother used the same term about Christmas being just around the corner, so I begged and begged to go to my friend’s house to spend the night on Saturday (yes, he lived on the corner). I did, but Santa didn’t arrive. On the following Friday, the last day of school before Christmas Break (which is was called then - now we get the PC “Winter Break”), we had a special visitor to class. I had figured out that the guys in the red suits at the malls weren’t the real deal because they always had to ask you your name. Sure, they were just “helpers”. This time, however, it had to be the genuine article. He not only knew everyone in the class’ name, but he also knew siblings’ names. No way would a helper know that! When it was my turn, he even mentioned my dog Tuffy! It took me several years to work out the magic, but I won’t divulge the answer quite yet.
