That’s actually a really helpful comment from Elly – many young women want to believe in their guy so much they ignore the obvious (could also be true for young men – just not my field of expertise). Too many nice people blame themselves – too many jerks blame others!
As a one-time example of said jerk, I can tell you he’s just not brave enough to tell her he’s moved on since she’s moved away. The cure, of course, is a new, but local, jerk to take his place.
Why do women LOVE jerks? They say no, but they don’t think the jerks are jerks even when beaten! I also hear this myth that they like guys who make them laff, jerks don’t make you laff!
In 1981, when I was 17, I was dating a boy from another state (we met during our summer jobs; he was staying with his sister). We wrote to each other every week & saw each other during vacations. We decided that we would go to his prom (we had to choose one), but every week I would ask him questions – like the actual DATE – and his letters never answered them. He finally said when his prom was…a week after he had attended it! Yeah, MAJOR jerk.
With Elly’s attitude toward men, I’m surprised she managed to grab a good guy like John. Also makes me wonder why he didn’t see her for the dreary type she is. Maybe they had to get married………
Lynn’s Notes:As soon as I arrived in Montreal, I wrote to my “boyfriend.” The relationship was pretty one sided, but that didn’t keep me from thinking about him all the time and writing down my feelings.-Being male I have some insight and it isn’t pretty. The guys, not all, have one view of things, and the gals, not all, have a different view. The expectations are too dissimilar.
For whatever reason, girls are attracted to “bad boys” because they are exciting to be with. Consider the “Twilight” series—neither Edward the vampire nor Jacob the werewolf is a particularly healthy choice! Most of us out grow this tendency and marry a nice guy whose interests compliment our own, who treats us decently and can make us laugh. (In some cases, it’s the nice guy who was your friend all through high school, whose shoulder you cried on when the bad boy broke your heart, and who you saw with new eyes after you got through college and started living life as an adult!)
Possibly just adding to the general discussion. As far as social media is concerned, I didn’t see her name, address or telephone number in her note. FYI this is a common discourse in any kind of group therapy, which we all can use at some time in our life. She’s not seeking attention, just telling us it happened to her.

Perhaps the boyfriend is too sensitive to tell her he’s moved on.maybe he died,or ran off to join the foreign legion? All kinds of possibilities.
