Both seats?~I’ve always asked: Who is stupider? The man who doesn’t remember to put the seat down because he doesn’t always need it down; or the woman, who forgets to check even though she always needs it down.

Who uses the toilet in the dark? I also happen to have a night-light in my bathroom.

There’s a click in the dark. Perhaps to show that the bulb had blown?

Let’s give El the benefit of the doubt and say she wasn’t awake enough to think about feeling around in the dark to check the status of the seat, but the remote possibility of a blown bulb in the middle of the night is hardly justification for always having to leave the seat down. …In our house, the seat stays in whatever position it was last used, in case that’s the position it will next be needed. We’ve saved a ton of money on replacing worn toilet seat hinges! :-/

I told the missus that I’ll start putting the seat back down when I’m done the day that she starts putting it up when she’s done. Otherwise, if I have to put it up and back down, I just won’t bother to put it up first. The subject has never been raised again (no pun intended).Oh, and she has never “fallen” in.

I never quite understood why men can’t pee into the toilet with the seat down.

In 31 years of marriage, my husband has NEVER forgotten to put the lid down. Granted, when we were first married we kept the lid down to keep the cats out of the toi…Anyway, he appreciated the humor of this strip.

Has a guy ever complained about the toilet seat being down or up? We just put it where we need it. And don’t sit without looking.

Males have to lift the seat, why can’t a woman learn also to look to see if the seat is up or not?

Physics says it is easier to put the seat down than to raise it, and since males use the toilet about four times as often as women, putting the seat down every time wastes a lot of energy that could be going to the honey-do jobs.

When first married to avoid this argument we both agreed to always put the seat and lid down. We passed this onto the kids and they have continued this practice. My daughter even taught her hubbie the same. Happiness….. until my second hubbie came along. Well, we can’t win all the time.

I’m almost 74 years old, and was taught in Health class to “close” the toilet before flushing to keep from spreading germs throughout the bathroom! Flushing causes the germs from your waste to be spread into the air and onto anything left laying around to catch them, INCLUDING toothbrushes!!THAT was enough to make me ALWAYS put the lid down! AND everyone else in the family!

Men and especially boys, raise the seat due to “aiming problems”. Would you rather site on a wet seat?

Even if the light had not been burned out, it is ok to pee in the dark. For women that is! We sit down and don’t have to worry about making a mess. Light and putting the seat back down is required by men unless they chose to sit and pee(which I read recently is healthier for the prostate). I think ALL men should have to sit on a toilet with the seat up at least once in their life to experience the cold porcelain and the wet butt in yucky water. It would let them know just what women go through.

Google this phrase to learn more.“nighttime light exposure suppresses the production of melatonin, the major hormone secreted by the pineal gland that controls sleep and wake cycles.”I don’t use light when I get up. Just have to go slowly to avoid the black dog and black cat, and the other cats that may be found enroute. And it doesn’t help that older men may have to get up 3 or 4 times at night to pee. I usually can’t get back to sleep after dawn. Yet my wife will often want to watch a TV show until midnight or sometimes after, but curls up and just listens, and falls asleep, and I am stuck watching her show. And after the show she wants half an hour of quiet music, which I am usually unable to fall asleep during. So I am being deprived of sleep, but at least she never made the toilet seat position an issue. Instead, it’s the position I leave the shower head in.

If ONLY women were as thoughtful of their husbands as they want their husbands to be of them.If they WANT me to put the seat UP, then they should be aware, and just put the seat down!

I acquiesced on this issue, but, yʻknow what? There is always something else that Iʻm NOT doing that I should be doing.Nag, nag nag nag nag. Now Iʻm shut of the complaining witch. Finally! Left her, divorced her, have a dog now that doesnʻt complain about the danged toilet seat.

An EQUAL woman is just as strong and capable of putting a toilet seat down as a man is of put it up.An EQUAL woman doesn’t ask for or expect SPECIAL treatment.

I read recently about a celebrity man who used to leave the seat up until once when he had to use it in the middle of the night. He fell in, and said he will never forget again.

    .

Note to partyalldatyme and Temnospondyl: It is common courtesy and chivalry to put the seat back down after you have used the commode. A woman doesn’t have a choice about whether or not to sit, and as Elly just found out, it is not pleasant to “fall in” to the water. A man who refuses to put the seat back down is just plain inconsiderate. A woman who refuses to put the seat back up is just protecting herself.

    .

And just for the record, the seat and the lid stay down in our house for the reason that K.C. cited – to keep the cats out.

This “debate” is stupid. Didn’t anyone notice that there is the ""seat" and a “lid”. BOTH should be put down.

And NO ONE should walk into a bathroom in the dark and think they can just sit down at “go” or stand up an pee for that matter.

The fact that women think they can (and fall in) proves that they are just as rude/lazy as the men they are accusing of being rude/lazy. As in the men want both the seat and the lip up, and the women want the lid up, but the seat down.

IF both of them put both the seat and the lid down, they would both know exactly what they need to do in the dark to get from that setup to the setup they want.

For reasons of hygiene, the lid should always be closed before the toilet is flushed. Hence, the seat and lid should be down whenever the toilet is not in use.

You would think mine would have learned to keep the seat down the night I fell in and got stuck @ 3am. Nope, it took the cat falling in and flinging water through 3/4 of the house before seat and lid down became the rule. He’s gone, but the seat AND lid down is the rule in my house. I still have cats.

Let’s just say guys — if you claim that “you don’t know what women want” and keep the seat up, you’re liable to find out what women DON’T want — you. This action is viewed as passive aggressive and shows your lack of regard for your wife’s comfort. If this is one of the few things she asks you to do — be a man and do it.

In the original black & white strip, Elly was soaked, which does not appear in the ninth panel of this strip. Probably a coloring error which ruined the joke.

Haven’t read through all the comments … but if both lids were down, as they were supposed to be, Elle would have had to raise the top lid to use the facilities, thereby finding that both lids were up. She would have discovered this even if the light was off.
