It sure looks like old Ed is going to make a return appearance doesn’t it? Well, kiss him good-bye. This is his last appearance in the comic strip.
SPOILER this part:
My theory is that Elly’s relationship with old Ed was the test run with what Lynn Johnston hoped would come about eventually with her own father once her mother died from cancer and did come about with Elly’s father (Grandpa Jim) in the comic strip after Elly’s mother died. When this comic strip was originally published in 1988 Lynn Johnston would have known her mother was very sick, but she has revealed in interviews that at that time she did not know her father also had cancer. He would die within a year after her mother died, so he did not move to live closer to Lynn.
