I would question how good a potato salad is if nobody wants it, but since eating this potato salad takes on moral implications, it’s goodness is important to the story. Elly is willing to make the self-sacrifice that will bring truth and justice for the unloved, but morally pure potato salad; while unfeeling John argues that there is nothing wrong with throwing it out. NOTHING WRONG, John? What kind of man are you that makes your wife stand up for potato salad, while you stand there like a heartless guttersnipe unwilling to lift a finger for that poor, poor potato salad? Good thing my spouse is not like you. My spouse would man up and eat that potato salad. Instead you leave it to Elly to eat for those millions of potato salads who know that their little potato lives will go fulfilled all thanks to brave women like Elly Patterson.
This actually came up in a different strip yesterday. Potato salad, egg salad, chicken salad, tuna salad, etc. I hate ‘em all. I can’t stand eating something that looks like it’s already been eaten.
If one is truly concerned about the starving, instead of stuffing yourself, would it make better sense to volunteer at a food drive or send a check to the local soup kitchen?
I concur. Ridiculous analogy. If you have a bit of food that’s going to waste, throwing it out is not going to impact starving people on the other side of the world. You can’t possibly get it to them without it spoiling. If their well being is a concern (as it should be), then contribute to a charity that can directly assist them, instead of worrying about sharing a bit of your own potato salad with them.
When I was a kid and my Mom brought up the starving children, it seemed perfectly logical to me to offer to send them the food I didn’t like, such as whatever it was on my plate at that moment. Big mistake!
The big issue is portion control. So much of the food in stores comes packaged for families, individual portions are priced exorbitantly. At least they finally made the number of hotdogs in a package equal the number of buns in the package, but really, do I need to eat eight of them? Elly should have scaled her recipe down or decreased the number of other foods served with the meal.
In our family it was Dad who was the “garbage can.” If there was a little bit left on our plates, we gave it to him. He could handle it, he had a good metabolism and did not get fat.
If you must throw food out either by dumping it in the trash or eating it when you do not need it, resolve to donate to a charity that feeds hungry people.
Food has entered into other issues besides “the starving Armenians”. It even became a point of WIN (Whip Inflation Now), arguably President Ford’s silliest cause. Americans were encouraged to clean off their dinner plates, so as not to “waste food”. If there was some basic understanding about economics they would realize inflation is caused by cheap credit and a devalued money supply, not rising prices.
Save the potato salad for another day, when you are hungry. Food that is still good should never go to waste. And donate to a charity that feeds hungry people. Problem solved!
Make the right amount for your needs, and you won’t have to throw any out.Come on people, food banks won’t take a few tablespoons of salad from a private doner, never mind the time and fuel you would waste getting it there! Except for Nightgaunt, most of you missed the point. Its all about being grateful for the plentiful food, and the quality of same here in North America compared to other parts of the world where hunger is an everyday reality.
We should never “stuff our face” and eat smaller portions. However eating out they give you too much so I take it home and can get 2 or more full meals out of it!
Yet another strip about food was where Elly was cleaning out the refrigerator and talking to herself while doing so:
Elly: “This is moldy. opens another Tupperware container Ugh, this smells like Michael’s room! I need to get rid of all this. Even though this food is no good, I still feel guilty in throwing it out…Elly disposes of rotten food in trash can…My mother would have made it into a casserole.”

40% of food in the U.S. is wasted. And people do go hungry.

No food goes to waste in our house. I am the designated leftover disposal unit. Lots of dishes ( like chili ) are better the second day.
