The best Lynn Johnston strips are like the ones today where the humour is very subtle. While the obvious joke in the final panel is that Connie considers Elly to be like her parent, there is also another darker joke lying there in the first three panels. Look at that dialogue. Elly starts off by saying Molly and Gayle will appreciate Connie, but follows that up with our kids (plural) will know what great parents we (plural) were and the next panel’s speech is also all plural, and then in the third panel the child is a he. Very cleverly worded.
