Elly, funny how you describe yourself as vain. I’ve never seen you as such. You dress plainly and generically. You wore your hair in a ponytail most of the time, once in a while, with a ribbon. You don’t appear to wear make up except perhaps for special occasions. So, it appears that you were only reacting to what Georgia and Mike said at the dinner table the other day. They made you feel frumpy and you felt propelled to change your hair. You know you will return to the same old Elly in ponytail because that is who you are.
Elizabeth almost never dresses like that. I think she is doing it this time because:
1. The comic strip needs a punchline. It’s a dirty job but someone had to do it.
2. She was mugged coming home from the grocery story with the milk and has decided it is in her best interest not to mention that to her mother.
3. Elly has spent so much time this week worrying about her hair, she has not done the laundry and these were the cleanest clothes Elizabeth could find.
4. Elly has talked to John, Michael and now Farley about her hair and Elizabeth is so desperate to avoid that conversation, she will do anything, including putting on her worst clothes to distract her mother.
5. Elizabeth is actually protesting for animal rights by showing she can be dirtier than most animals.
6. She’s not dirty. She just finished eating tacos the Patterson way with food flying everywhere.
Personally, I don’t feel there’s anything wrong with having a little pride in one’s appearance. I will NEVER be one of those people out & about in pajamas or ripped jeans (whether they’re bought that way or not).
Most animals are more fastidious in their personal grooming habits, comparatively, than humans. They are better “housekeepers” and in many instances, much better parents.

time to launder those pants and socks Lizzie is wearing, give herself a bath, and toss out her “holy” elbow shirt

Farley has a look on his face like he is thinking “Did she say ‘Like animals’? Do I look as bad as Elisabeth? That’s depressing…” (lays head down…)

Life is vanity, chasing the wind. There is nothing new under the sun.

Plenty of animals exhibit vanity, especially during mating season.
