it’s a time honored tradition, cruisin’ for chicks. " Hey, babe. You must be tired. You’ve been going through my mind all day ! " or this one from ’ American Graffiti ’ : " Anybody ever told you that you look like Sandra Dee ? " that line worked, and it’s a good one because the name can be changed to any actress one may find attractive, in any era. young girls did, and do, the very same thing.
A group of boys equals too much testosterone equals caveman behavior. All girls need to be taught to stay away from a group of boys at all costs. Too much testosterone often leads to tragic consequences. My parents never told me this but I instinctively knew but unfortunately, some girls think they are harmless and perhaps want some attention – of which they gladly give and not necessarily what the girls want or expect. Clearly, Elly is one of those mothers who are not too concerned about a truckful of teen boys cruising around. John, who is now a father, should know better. He should not lend Mike the car for no reason but I think this is Gordon’s father’s truck and John should and knowing his family history, my guess is his father is all too happy to give him the truck keys to get him out of the house. Since this is a family strip, this cruising will be innocuous and PG RATED.
The question for me is when did Mike and Gordon pick up Brian Enjo? He is normally such a polite and studious boy. It seems very strange for him to be out cruising the streets of Milborough with the boys.
Every generation goes through their rites of passage. We are still in the age of the private automobile, so this is what we can expect for some time. :P
A couple times when I was a teen, I piled into a car with 2-3 buddies and went downtown of the major city we lived in, then drove around tossing pennies out the windows to the hookers working the streets. They didn’t seem to appreciate it but we figured free money was free money and they didn’t have to do anything for it.
Not “cruising” in the traditional sense but we probably got more laughs out of it than standard-issue ogling did.
After my kids got their own driver’s licence, and they got part time jobs soon after, we didn’t have an official curfew anymore, since by then they knew that to have time for their homework, projects, after school activities, and work, they had to make such a schedule that they got enough rest for all…
It was a building process up to that age, and looking into the future of them leaving home and going to university and having to be completely responsible for their activities and I’m glad that it all worked out…
Classy of them to only think it, and not yell it. But I don’t get why they’d need to be in a car. Well, maybe it’s the getaway opportunities if things get awkward…
When this strip first ran in 1992 they were shouting the “OOGH OOGH OOGH!” rather than thinking it. Look at the speech balloon in the original appearance:
It’s another instance where Lynn Johnston has made some alterations for today’s readers. Maybe she was afraid of being accused of encouraging sexual harassment in this age of #metoo?
They certainly seem to have crammed an awful lot into the hour and a half that Gordon’s father allowed them. They’ve been to 3 eating places, at least one of which served them food (see yesterday’s strip, panel 1). They stopped and picked up Brian and they are cruising for girls after 10PM. One wonders if Lynn forgot the time constraint.
Back in the dark ages, it was called”dragging main”, then slipping off to a secluded place to “park”, which entailed, hopefully, going “ all the way”. For us losers, ones with cars and no dates, we would go “bushwhacking”, in which losers searched out parkers going all the way, sneaking up and hitting them with the “brights”, screaming, and then “peeling out”. If this sounds familiar to anyone, then you are an old f-rt like me… My condolences.
Gosh, maybe the hookers I’ve seen in several cities are different than most places, but the gals in this comic don’t look anything like hookers. They look more like office workers. Not that clothing always makes a difference; I was followed in the past wearing anything from dressy office secretary clothes to grubby outside-working clothes to three layers of winter clothes and a parka! A female is a female when guys are out and about.

Here’s a similar question: what are the girls in the final panel doing out after ten o’clock PM? Shouldn’t they be home?

Ha. Not a chance. We need to get that adolescent P and V out of our systems before we can land a wife. Then we can’t have it back for about 50 years.
